Many people believe that allowing the Springboks to play in the top domestic rugby competition, the Currie Cup, gives sides like the Bulls and Stormers an unfair advantage. The Bulls, for example, fielded 11 Springboks in the Currie Cup semi-final.

Do you think the Boks should be allowed to play? Have your say. Send us your comments in this post below, or vote in our poll, on the right hand side near the bottom of the home page.

I don’t think the Boks should be allowed to play in the Currie Cup.
They were selected to represent SA in international games – let the rest of the non-Bok players be allowed to showcase their talents!

Saying that…the Bulls may have had 11 Boks, but the Sharks still kicked butt :-)

Yes. The Sharks, who had a good number of current and former Boks themselves, really gave it everything. You don’t often see the Bulls starved of possession! And we held out for a win! The previous three Bulls v Sharks Currie Cup semi-finals were won by the Bulls, so this is quite an achievement.

I don’t think there is an answer to this that would make everyone happy . . . in defence of allowing Bok players into currie cup games, it ensures that they aren’t “rusty” when it comes to playing their next international games, and it’s also the reason why the top teams are the top teams – they have the best players, and depth of players!
On the flip side, it’s often the non-Bok players who get the teams to the finals as the Boks are too busy with Tri-Nations, tours, etc, and then the Bok players come in once these are over and reap the rewards and the glory! Which is a bit unfair on the players that worked their butts off to get there! And it also means that the non-Bok players have less action on field to prove they are worthy of actually making the Bok squad.
Maybe they need to have X% of the same players for the whole tournament in the final games?

I like development of young players. Quota system. Five Boks per team only. Whaddayuthink?

Yes, the development of young players and quota system are all good, but ONLY if the players are good enough! This “you HAVE to have x number of players of colour” is all well and good, provided they have the skills…it isn’t fair on the player to put them into a team based on skin colour when they don’t have the skill…it’s like saying, well you only got the job coz you’re a woman/man/blonde/brunette etc…i would want to know that I got the position because i have what it takes!
If we don’t have good enough players coming through the ranks by now, then the rugby powers-that-be need to sort out their development from school level – because clearly it’s NOT working!
but that’s my humble opinion ;)
