It was a day for fab royal fashion, extremely short miniskirts (they surely get shorter each year), impossibly high high heels and Amagents cruising in style as the Vodacom Durban July 2011 paid tribute to the theme of a royal affair.

Crowds flocked to the Durban July designers’ showcase and heaving fans packed the pubs and betting lines as Durban turned out in style to celebrate its greatest racing and fashion day out (with a big helping hand from our brethren up north). The guys and gals turned out in their designer best, and frilly hats off to SA’s top designers who showcased all the best of the Durban July 2011 fashion.

As usual the Miller Marquee (Miller Dark Horse) was a riot of colour and energy as 5FM’s team got the party started in style.

There was a tragic end to proceedings after the main event of the day the 2011 Vodacom July, when Big City Life, a big fans’ favourite, pulled up lame at the end of the race and had to be euthanased.

According to the weekend papers, Big City Life lost his footing just before the finish line and broke his left front leg. Putting the horse down was the humane thing to do.

Jockey Anthony Delpech, again riding a Mike de Kock trained horse stormed to his second straight July victory. The Mount Edgecombe resident has now piloted four winners to match De Kock, a winner with Ipi Tombe, Greys Inn, Bold Silvano and now Igugu.
