Drawing thousands of competitors each year, the Midmar Mile is the world’s largest open water swimming event.
Each year swimmers, from local schoolkids, to representatives of swimming clubs around the country, and international competitors, head to Midmar Dam near Howick in the KZN Midlands for this famous aquatic challenge.
In order to handle the vast number of competitors, the swimmers swim out in several groups at staggered intervals in eight batches over two days. The event, of course, is swum over a mile, or 1 600m.
When: Saturday, February 11 and 12, 2012
Where: Midmar Dam, near Howick
