From the moment you enter the tree-lined grounds of Fordoun Hotel and Spa, just five minutes from the N3, you know that this is a special place. It has a real old farm feel, but this is unlike any old farm I’ve ever been to – it’s luxurious, sophisticated and exceptionally peaceful.
Built in 2003 on a working farm, the original 1860s settler homestead and barns have been adapted to retain a sense of history while at the same time embracing all the creature comforts of the 21st century.
The Bates family oversees every guest’s experience at Fordoun Hotel and Spa with a warmth that is echoed by all the staff, who are reassuringly calm and ever-willing to help. Many of them have been involved with the estate since before the hotel was built and there’s a clear sense of pride in what they do.
Owner/decorator Micheline Bates has created 18 individually-themed bedrooms – all beautifully appointed, with generous dimensions and luxurious finishes, including underfloor heating – a boon on cold winter nights! Carefully chosen artwork by local artists completes the look in every room, while cosy lounges and wood fires in the main building ooze decadent charm – the perfect setting for a nightcap or afternoon tea.
Five new suites have been added at the top of the site, with expansive indoor/outdoor showers, wi fi access and one of the most exceptional views imaginable. Should it take your fancy, private dining is readily arranged with the statuesque Drakensberg Mountains as your backdrop.

The hotel’s Skye restaurant uses locally-sourced, organic ingredients where possible, serving dishes from the decadent to the healthy. A hearty breakfast sets you up for a day of exploring the local area, relaxing on the estate or being pampered in the world class spa.
It’s hard to imagine, but up until 2002, cows gathered in the spot that is now the award-winning Fordoun Spa. Today, the team of resident experts includes skilled masseurs, Reiki and Bio-energy specialists, a traditional African Healer and highly trained aestheticians. Guests can take advantage of the fabulous facilities, including saline floatation pool, heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym, sauna and steam room to wash away stresses. Between treatments, soak up the benefits in the meditation room or enjoy a cup of herbal tea in the Green Room, with views out into the garden.

The Africology range of products, available in all rooms and used in many of the spa therapies, is made on site using plants from the indigenous garden and in conjunction with Traditional Healer Dr Elliot Ndlovu. Based on a philosophy of respect for our bodies and the environment, every one smells incredible and feels utterly indulgent! Plus you know it’s doing wonders for your heart and soul.
For a truly African experience that leaves you feeling relaxed and invigorated – all just 90 minutes from Kloof – a stay at Fordoun Hotel and Spa is a must! – Hayley Dennyson
