According to some reports from Durban North right up to Richards Bay, there was a shaking of the earth, which lasted around two seconds.
Did you feel the effects? Did you let the authorities know? Comment below and let us know your thoughts.
“Edwin”, from Phoenix, mailed us to let us know he felt the tremor and it was more like around 10pm. Doody Adams of Mount Edgecombe said she checked her clock to make sure of the time because she was so surprised by the force of the tremor. According to Doody, the tremor was at 9.47pm. The Mercury newspaper reported that it had been inundated with calls from concerned residents.

Further reports in from Umhlanga and La Lucia. Nothing on the Council for Geoscience website, although there was an incident at Klerksdorp gold mines, North West Province. Little bit far away I’d say.
More reports from Durban North, Phoenix, Overport and even Hillcrest!

Yes I did around 10pm I am from Phoenix
Hi there..Yesterday I was sitting watching TV at around 10.15pm and all of a sudden I felt the ground shake … like something was trembling. It lasted for two seconds. I thought I was imagining it or something…
Thanks Melisha, where are you from? Keep the comments coming.
I felt it and thought it was nothing, maybe just my imagination. It lasted less than a second and was not intense at all. When I logged on to Facebook shortly afterwards I noticed that people were talking about an earth tremor in Durban. Only then did I realise what had just occurred. It must have been more intense in some areas and less in others, such as mine. It was around 10pm and I live in La Lucia.
We felt it in Phoenix. Was also around 10pm and was for a couple seconds.
I am in Durban North. My husband and I felt it at about 9.50pm. The room shook for a little bit and then there was a bang. We thought there had been an explosion nearby.
I live in Hillcrest, Durban. I felt the earth tremor last night around 10pm. I asked my husband if he felt it, he thought it was our neighbour rolling his gate closed. I looked out the window, and noticed that our neighbour wasn’t home yet. It sounded like a rumbling noise, like a thunder storm – but it only lasted about 20 seconds.
My mom felt it and we’re in Overport.
Hi. I heard and felt something up in Kloof. We live close to Field’s Hill. I thought a truck had crashed!! Literally seconds though!
Just a quick rattle at 21:47. Checked my watched.
My daughter thought a bg truck drove into her house in Glen Anil.
I also felt it in Verulam just before 10pm. I didn’t know it was a tremor at the time.
This is scary
Someone must know what happened,where!
It was around 21h47. My Daughter and I felt it, I was sitting and working with my laptop and my daughter was doing her homework.
We just stared at each other and did not know what to make of it. I live in the Palmview Drive, Phoenix area.
I live in Virginia, Durban North….felt it and heard the rumbling. Just before 10pm.
That’s strange … We didn’t feel anything in Newlands West!
Scary stuff guys …
Durban does sit on a fault line that many people do not know of … was in the paper a while back… I didn’t feel anything though…
The earth shook for me! I thought my dog cut one…
Classic!
I am from Phoenix and I also felt it around 09:46. I was studying for my COMP201 test when it happened. My books fell from my bookshelf!
The earth shook fo me too, but thought my wife cut 1.
Ha Ha. She would never have done that!
We live in La Lucia Ridge and also felt the whole building shake for 2 seconds or so. The two of us didn’t think much of it until we looked at each other and said “did you feel that”. Then we realised it was a tremor!
I live in Somerset Park. around 21h50, I felt what appeared to be a shockwave from a distant explosion. I looked at my wife – she was still watching the movie and didn’t flinch, so I thought nothing of it.
I live in Glenashley, and have damage to my home from the tremor … tile lifted off the upstairs floor as if the walls are now too small for the floor, a small crack in the concrete slab between the upstairs and downstairs, and a small crack in one of the walls. My next door neighbour has a burst water main following the tremor too.
Wow, that sounds hectic. Thanks for the feedback. More people in your area must have suffered damage.
I didn’t notice this one, BUT in 1996 there was a tremor on almost the same date. It was 6 October, the day my hubby and I started dating. It was probably around the same time of night, too. Makes you think!
Some earthquake, that.
I felt it… I live in Durban North. It was a loud bang and the whole house rattled for about two seconds. my bed even moved. However the dogs did not bark . . . which was wierd . . .
I am in Durban North and definatly felt it. Thought somone had climbed into the roof
as there was a loud creak from the old rafters. Can’t say it felt like an earth tremor
though, was more like a shockwave in the air than ground, a faint rumble could be heard as well.
I live in Glen Hills and felt and heard it…felt like a sonic boom or heavy thunder. Moments later it was all over Twitter, majority of the people reported in around the Umhlanga/La Lucia/ Dbn North region, I didn’t realise it was as far away as Hillcrest as well…very odd that nobody knows exactly what the cause was.
We live in Padfield Park, Pinetown and also hear and felt the explosion rather strongly last night around 9:45. Would love to know what it was?
Often when a tremor or earthquake occurs, it can sound like an oncoming freight train, sometimes like an explosion or boom, as sound waves are released when the earth cracks and moves, it is very possible that it was a very small earthquake, as tremors rarely cause damage and ground normally can open with a quake, very seldom a tremor. Much of Durban, actually most of Durban is built on reclaimed land so if a huge quake does hit us a tremendous amount of damage could be expected as happened at Kobi in Japan. Another factor that would definitely influence damage to building s and houses etc, is that no building or home in Durban is built to earthquake standards, basically built to withstand a major earthquake, The only city is South Africa that has legislation stating that all new government buildings and schools have to be able to withstand earthquakes is Cape Town
